Challenge
To create a system that allows employers to optimize their occupation of workspaces, without creating shortages.
Outcome
A cutting-edge combination of iotspot hardware and online software, along with a range of cellular and bluetooth-connected sensors that continuously monitor workspaces and book them.
The impact
With iotspot’s booking system, organizations are able to maximize workspace utilization and minimize time loss.
How does it work?
The core of this solution is an LTE-M based device with 2G fallback that is placed on a workspace, such as a desk or a boardroom table. Using grid power, it’s a perfect gateway for low-power Bluetooth peripheral sensors. When a user reserves a workspace in the iotspot app or via smartphone NFC, the device indicates that the spot is reserved using a visible LED-ring. IoT Hub has been integrated into the Bachmann Power Distribution Unit. Not only does this make the workspace smarter, but it extends the power supply and provides USB charging.
The engineering process
SODAQ has been contracted to fully develop iotspot’s hardware (PCB) as well as the embedded software application. The solution is based on a u-blox cellular module and an ATMEL (Microchip) microcontroller. For the enclosures, iotspot has hired a separate company that has helped shape the unique design and form language that makes iotspot user-friendly and approachable.
The collaboration
Iotspot was one of SODAQ’s first project customers and has trusted SODAQ over the years to continuously improve the product. To allow iotspot to focus on selling the solution, creating a seamless experience for customers through standardized processes, and an elaborate platform with a mobile app, SODAQ has taken on the testing and certification of the product. With the successful sales of the product, iotspot continues to grow and SODAQ has an ongoing supply of projects from additional requests for new sensors and improvements to the existing products.
